Some homes just have a personality to them. The kind with brick exteriors, arched windows, steep roof lines, and details that newer builds don't bother with anymore. When a home like that comes to us with an aging, worn-out roof, we take it seriously - because the wrong replacement choice can flatten all that character in an instant.

Here's what we were working with: a beautiful older home with a lot of architectural complexity. Multiple roof planes, steep pitches, dormers, and a distinct gothic-style turret entry. The original cedar shake had given up. Moss, debris buildup, and years of weathering had taken their toll. The bones of the home were great - the roof just wasn't keeping up anymore.

Cedar shake was the clear answer. Not every roof calls for it, but this one did. The warm, natural tones of fresh cedar shake complement the brick and stonework in a way that no asphalt shingle really can. It ties everything together. And beyond the looks, cedar shake is genuinely tough - it handles wind, rain, and temperature swings well when it's installed right and maintained properly.

The tricky part of a job like this is the detail work. Getting consistent lines across multiple intersecting pitches and valleys takes real skill. Cut wrong, and the whole roof reads as sloppy. Cut right, and every angle flows cleanly into the next. That's the part we focus on - the craftsmanship that most people won't notice because it just looks correct.

Cedar shake roofing isn't for every home, but when it fits, nothing else comes close. If your home has that older, classic character and you've been putting off dealing with the roof, this is worth thinking about before the wet season digs in deeper.
